Newborn photography sessions
Welcoming a newborn is a fleeting and incredibly special time. Newborn photography captures those first tiny details that change so quickly, creating images you’ll treasure long after these early days have passed.
Newborn sessions at Captured by Cheryl Photography take place in my purpose-built studio in Old Oscott, Birmingham. Sessions are calm, unhurried and completely baby-led, allowing plenty of time for feeding, settling and cuddles.
The ideal time to photograph your newborn is within the first few weeks, while babies are naturally sleepy and comfortable being gently posed. This allows me to capture those soft, curled-up images that make newborn photography so timeless.
Your baby’s safety and comfort are always my highest priority. I’m fully trained in newborn safety and gentle handling, with extensive experience photographing young babies in a relaxed and supportive environment.
What to expect from your newborn session
A newborn photography session usually lasts 2–3 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing and cuddles without any rushing.
Newborn sessions are available Sunday to Friday. Sunday sessions must be pre-advised due to limited availability.
How to prepare for your newborn photoshoot
To help your session run as smoothly as possible, here are a few simple tips:
-
Please dress your baby in a loose baby grow
-
Aim to feed your baby on arrival where possible
-
If bottle feeding, please bring extra bottles
-
Breastfeeding or pumping during the session is absolutely welcome
Growth spurts are very common in the first few weeks, so it’s completely normal for babies to feed more frequently or appear hungrier than usual.
If siblings are being included, please bring a second adult who can take them home once their photographs are complete.
If your baby doesn’t usually use a dummy, it’s still advisable to bring one along. Sessions are new experiences for babies, and sucking can help them self-soothe during posing.
For hygiene reasons, all footwear is left at the entrance to the studio.
Booking information
A non-refundable booking fee is required at the time of booking. This will be deducted from the final balance, which is due on the day of your session.

Is my baby too old for newborn photography?
It’s never too late to have your baby photographed by a professional newborn photographer in Birmingham.
Curly, sleepy newborn poses are never guaranteed, but they are more commonly achieved with babies under four weeks old. Older babies may still sleep during the session and enjoy some wrapped or awake images, but may not be comfortable curling into womb-style poses.
Some babies sleep throughout their session, while others are wide awake – both are completely normal. Please don’t worry, as beautiful images can be created regardless of how your baby settles on the day.
With over 15 years’ experience photographing newborns, I have a strong success record in achieving a varied gallery of images. If your baby needs extra time or doesn’t settle as expected, we’ll always discuss options together during your session.
Booking your newborn photoshoot
Newborn sessions should be booked in advance, as I take on a limited number of due dates each month. This allows flexibility to accommodate babies who arrive early or later than expected.
Session dates are confirmed once your baby has arrived. Sunday sessions must be requested in advance due to limited availability.
A non-refundable booking fee is required at the time of booking.
The remaining balance is due on the day of your session.

The newborn stage is brief, but the memories don’t have to fade. Newborn photography gives you something lasting to hold onto long after these first weeks have passed.

Benefits of hiring a professional newborn photographer
While it can be tempting to rely on snapshots from a phone or ask a friend to take a few photos, professional newborn photography offers something very different.
A professional newborn photographer brings specialist experience working with very young babies. Sessions are designed to be calm, comfortable and baby-led, allowing plenty of time for feeding, settling and cuddles. This creates a relaxed environment where your baby’s comfort and safety always come first.
Professional newborn photography is also about skill and attention to detail. From gentle posing and soft lighting to carefully chosen angles, every element is considered to create timeless images that capture the tiny features and expressions that change so quickly.
The result is a carefully curated set of photographs that preserve this fleeting stage in a way that simple snapshots can’t replicate.
Choosing the right newborn photographer in Birmingham
When choosing a newborn photographer, experience and specialism matter. Look for someone who focuses specifically on newborn photography and whose portfolio reflects a consistent, calm style that resonates with you.
It’s also important to consider training, qualifications and safety. A professional newborn photographer should be experienced in safe handling and posing, and happy to discuss their approach to working with babies.
Reviews and testimonials can offer helpful insight into what the experience is really like, from the atmosphere of the session to the finished images.
Finally, take time to review pricing and packages so you understand what’s included and can choose an option that feels right for you and your family.
